SJC 250 Celebration
“Honoring The Past
Inspiring The Future”

California’s First Spanish-Speaking Settlers

Steven Hackel
Chair & Professor, Dept of History
UC Riverside

Date and Time

Sunday, January 11th, 2026
1:30-3:00PM

Topic

Dr. Hackel will bring to light the misconception that the Pobladores were not exclusively Spanish-born elites but were of diverse backgrounds—dispelling the myth of a homogenous “Spanish” settlement. The audience might be surprised by how multicultural and multiracial the early settlers of Alta California truly were.
